Flores focuses on nature writing and the biographies of animals. His most recent work was 2023 Rachel Carson Book Prize winner Wild New World: The Epic Story of Animals and People in America. Serving as guest judge, Beth Piatote is a Nez Perce scholar, playwright, and associate professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkley. She is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation.
A contemporary novelist, short story writer and memoirist, Hannah Pittard is celebrated for the wit, emotional resonance and fearless storytelling found in her works. Her latest book, “If You Love It Let It Kill You,” was praised by the New York Times as “a sharp, propulsive portrait of fractured love and lingering grief.” Pittard is the Guy Davenport Professor in English at the University of Kentucky, where she teaches in the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program.
