Character and World-building go hand in hand for Swanson. In this presentation we will explore how to create characters that are unforgettable, and how their interests, desires, fears, and needs can drive the sort of world in which we choose to place them. As writers, we each have experiences that have formed us. Together, we will work on exercises designed to help explore how our unique experiences can help us to create unforgettable characters.
Cidney Swanson writes unforgettable characters who are genuinely shocked to find themselves thrown into perilous Sci-Fi/Fantasy situations. Cidney’s complex plotting and character arcs have garnered awards, including Kirkus Reviews Best in Teen/YA 2012, an SCBWI Spark Honor Book award, a Kay Snow award, and the 2020 Good Story Grant. Cidney writes full time, dividing her year between Oregon and Florida with her family and entirely too much rain.
