1:15-2:00pm reading for 3rd-4th grade

The Little Black Mustang tells the story of a wild horse who is captured from the open sagebrush country of Oregon. One day, a little girl picks him out of the hundreds of horses being held at the government corrals and the two of them begin a powerful journey together. The little girl learns about the world of wild horses and the little mustang learns the world of humans – and that he can trust this little girl to be his partner on a wonderful new adventure, together.

About the Authors:

Ashley Ahearn (author) and Catie Michel (illustrator) are both horse girls. Ashley is a longtime NPR reporter and podcast producer who lives in the sagebrush country of Washington and is training her very own little black mustang, in real life. This book was inspired by him and his journey from the wild to the world of humans. Ashley learns from him everyday and wanted to share her love of wild horses and the lessons they can teach us with children everywhere. Catie Michel is an artist who has been drawing horses since she was a little girl – and riding them whenever she can.

Presented in collaboration with The Roundhouse Foundation, a private family foundation based in Sisters, Oregon that supports creative solutions to the unique challenges associated with rural culture and the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
