Human brains are naturally wired to prioritize negative information – a survival mechanism inherited from our ancestors. In high-stakes roles like corrections and law enforcement, this negativity bias can intensify stress and keep us trapped impacting our health, performance and relationships. This session will help you recognize the underlying messages behind stress and negative emotions, distinguish between accurate and faulty signals and explore scenarios likely to challenge us in unique ways. You’ll build awareness of your thoughts and build new habits so you can respond with clear-headed, effective action in the challenging environments you face every day.
- Develop awareness of personal and situational negativity biases and the “Big 3” emotional traps, recognizing how these automatic responses influence judgment and behavior.
- Evaluate the accuracy of negative stress signals and determine which responses support effective decision-making in corrections and law enforcement contexts.
- Apply strategies to interrupt negative emotion patterns and take clear-headed, adaptive action under pressure.
