Kids’ Storytelling Essentials Workshop

January 9 @ 3:45 pm - 5:15 pm

A youth workshop on how to write fabulous stories!

This is an in-person program. Registration is required. This workshop is for children 11 and older (as per Library policy, youth aged 11 and older may attend library programs unaccompanied by an adult).

Do you love to read and write stories? In this creative writing workshop, we will do an overview of the most important elements of a good story. Through games, discussion and writing exercises, we will explore characters and character development, setting and world building, building conflict, and story plotting. All students will walk away with a brainstorm for a fabulous short story, novel, or screenplay!

Claire Brislin a writer, educator, performer and creative coach who believes in the transformative power of passion-driven learning. She has a BA in English from Haverford College, an MA in Literature from Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English, and an MFA in Writing for Children from Simmons University.

She has taught high school and middle school English, literature, humanities, drama and creative writing in schools across the country and the world, including Colorado, Singapore, Alaska, Chile, Arizona and Oregon. Throughout her twelve-year teaching career, she has worked with incredible teachers and students from around the globe and has witnessed first hand the profound power of centering JOY and passion at the heart of education.

She left traditional classroom teaching to pursue my MFA in Writing for Children and has been writing children’s literature, from picture books to young adult novels. Her love for writing and nurturing creativity combined with her commitment to improving education led to the birth of For the Joy of Learning (www.forthejoyoflearning.com), which prioritizes passion-driven creative programming and mentorship for youth.

Claire currently lives and works in beautiful Bend, Oregon where in addition to her writing and creative work she enjoys singing, hiking, mountain biking, and general adventuring with her darling pup, Haiku.
