Flight Attendants: Revolutionizing a Workplace

November 15, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Learn how the profession changed the aviation workplace and beyond.

The flight attendant profession has changed dramatically from the days of “Sky Girls” to what it is today. During those years the women and men who chose this career have made workplace changes, many of them through the collective power of the Association of Flight Attendants, some through the courts, others by advocating Congress and still more through the courage of individuals to fight what they saw as an injustice. Those changes affected not only aviation, but many other workplaces as well. Come learn about our remarkable history and its impact on what we know today as commercial aviation.

Ellie Larson worked as a flight attendant and purser (chief flight attendant) at United Airlines for over 30 years. During that time she was based in New York, Taipei and London, flying international routes. Additionally she was very active in her union, The Association of Flight Attendants – CWA, serving as local President in Taipei for nine years and then as the Union’s International Director and the Executive Assistant to the International President in Washington DC. For three years she served as the Executive Director of the Solidarity Center, an organization championing worker’s rights in developing countries. She has also been an adjunct professor for several Minnesota universities in their MBA and MIM programs.
