Dia de los Muertos – Imagery of Life

October 30, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Dive into the imagery of Dia de los Muertos.

This is a prerecorded presentation. A link to view the program will be available on October 30 at 5:00 p.m.

Please join us for a presentation about the art and imagery of the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. Learn about what the elements of art – like skulls, flowers and hearts – symbolize to the people who create artistic expressions about the fall holiday. This presentation will familiarize you with artists who are well known for their “Day of the Dead” artwork, historical and more recent, and will bring you a new understanding of the celebration’s purpose.

Arizona native Anna Melendez Johnson loves the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. The annual holiday brings joy to her heart as it honors the lives of friends and family who have passed before us. Each year she dresses in full “La Catrina” costume and self-created makeup and attends Dia de los Muertos celebrations across Arizona. She has won contests for her Catrina look and enjoys taking photos with festival attendees.

Anna hopes her research and passion for the elements and celebrations surrounding the Dia de los Muertos helps you to understand the holiday as it celebrates life, not death.
