Hear Oregon author, Dan Shryock, talk about his book, Cycling Across Oregon: Stories, Surprises & Revelations Along the State’s Scenic Bikeways, which follows a group of friends as they set out to explore the state’s 17 official scenic bikeways in a single year. This is a study of rural Oregon — the people, the places, and the discoveries that make cycling a unique travel experience. Stand in ruts created by countless wagons on the Oregon Trail, meet the owners of a ghost town, pedal over the Cascades, bike through historic covered bridges, and climb the state’s oldest standing lighthouse.

Dan Shryock is a Salem-based author and travel writer who focuses on cycle tourism. His work has appeared in magazines and websites in California and the Pacific Northwest, including Bend Magazine. He has explored back roads and hillsides across the western United States, British Columbia, England, Italy, Mexico, and New Zealand in search of unique bicycle adventures. He’s also been known to savor a good espresso.

A career journalist, he served as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Indiana, California, and Oregon. While working for the Times-Advocate in Escondido, Calif., he teamed with colleagues to become Pulitzer Prize finalists (Explanatory Journalism) in 1990. He later served as editor of the Gazette-Times in Corvallis and as digital media director of the News-Register in McMinnville.
