Bend Senior High School 5K Fun Run

April 6 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

$10

Bend Senior High School’s National Honor Society is excited to announce our 3rd annual 5K Sparrow Fun Run! This event is being put on to support Bend High’s Sparrow Elaine, an infant with expensive medical issues. Before Elaine was born, doctors noticed many abnormalities, and she was later diagnosed with TAR syndrome. This has led to many expensive medical costs in order to ensure that Elaine grows up healthy and strong. To help with her medical costs, we invite all runners, walkers, and other supporters to this event to help raise funds for Elaine and her family. This event has been fun and exciting for all of our past participants and we invite you to come join the fun!

After the race, we will have some snacks for everyone and some treats graciously provided by the Sparrow Bakery of Bend!

About National Honor Society, Elaine, and the Sparrow Clubs

National Honor Society is a community-service oriented club at Bend Senior High School with the goal of helping our peers and our community. It empowers its members to embark on community service projects around our school and community while exercising the traits of scholarship, leadership, and having a good character.

The Sparrow Clubs is a nonprofit organization that pairs a family that has kids with medical needs, Sparrows, with schools to empower students to band together for a common cause of raising funds for the Sparrow. This year, the Sparrow for Bend Senior High School is a young girl named Elaine. Before she was born, doctors discovered that the ulna bones in both of Elaine’s arms were very short and she was missing the radius bone in both of them. Doctors also discovered that she had extra heart valves and a cyst inside of her brain which may require surgery later. After her birth, she was diagnosed with TAR Syndrome, which means that she doesn’t have enough platelets in her blood. In order to help with this, Elaine needs regular blood transfusions. Due to TAR Syndrome, she also bruises easier and faster than most other people. In late September, Elaine had to get a feeding tube since she was struggling to put on weight after birth. Thanks to the tube, she was able to grow and become stronger. In early November, Elaine went to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to get a Hickman port on the right side of her chest, making it easier for her parents to take care of her and give her submergible baths. Elaine is a sweet baby girl, who manages to smile all the time despite her struggles, hospital visits, and unpleasant procedures. Bend High has a goal of reaching $15,000 dollars to help with her medical goal, something that we hope to help attain with the Fun Run.
