Bend High NHS 5K Fun Run

Bend Senior High School’s National Honor Society is excited to announce our 4th annual 5K Sparrow Fun Run! This event is being put on to support Bend High’s Sparrow, Saylor, a medically complex child. Saylor was born with a CASK gene mutation that impacts her brain development, leading to the medical challenges she bravely faces. Like Saylor’s family, Bend High is determined to make sure Saylor receives vital medical treatments so that she grows up healthy and strong! To help with her medical costs, we invite all runners, walkers, and other supporters to this event to help raise funds for Saylor and her family. This event has been fun and exciting for all of our past participants, and we invite you to come join the fun!

About National Honor Society, Saylor, and the Sparrow Clubs
National Honor Society is a community-service oriented club at Bend Senior High School with the goal of helping our peers and our community. It empowers its members to embark on community service projects around our school and community while exercising the traits of scholarship, leadership, and good character.
The Sparrow Clubs is a nonprofit organization that pairs a family that has kids with medical needs, Sparrows, with schools to empower students to band together for a common cause of raising funds for the Sparrow.
This year, Bend Senior High School’s Sparrow is a 6-year-old girl named Saylor who has medical challenges from a mutation of the CASK gene, which plays an integral role in brain development. While Saylor experiences many cognitive and physical challenges from this condition, she consistently exceeds her doctors’ expectations. Saylor usually uses a wheelchair, especially in public, though she can walk on her own — a milestone her parents were once told she would never reach. She is nonverbal but has learned to communicate with her eyes in ways her family understands. Another challenge Saylor faces in day-to-day life is a heightened sensory sensitivity, and loud noises can overwhelm her. Headphones can help manage this. Saylor also has trouble swallowing food and drinks and may need to have a g-tube in the future. Despite these challenges, Saylor’s determination, smiles, and joy inspire everyone she meets!
Students are working hard to raise money for Saylor through community service and support for her and her family! Bend High has a goal of reaching $15,000. The Fun Run will be an important part of this fundraising effort!
