It’s 1935 in the small town of Hilo, Hawai’i, and the Mauna Loa vol- cano looms large, an ever-present reminder of the Big Island’s wildness and beauty. Daniel Abe, a young doctor born in Hilo, is returning home to Hawai’i after a prestigious stint in a Chicago hospital, but just as his boat approaches Hilo, the volcano begins to stir.

On the island, his uncle Koji is still living in the past with memories of Daniel’s mother, Mariko, the great love of his life. Daniel is like a son to him, and his arrival is a welcome respite, despite the betrayal that Koji has struggled to keep from him all these years. But as Daniel wrestles with secrets of his own, and gets closer to his childhood sweetheart, Maile, the long-held truth simmering below the surface will be unearthed.

The Color of Air interweaves the stories of Daniel, Koji, Mariko, and Maile to create a rich, vibrant, bittersweet chorus that celebrates their bond to one another and to their close-knit immigrant community. As Mauna Loa threatens their lives and livelihoods, it also melds the past and present, love and memory, to reveal a path forward for them all.
