People Not Politicians – Redistricting in Oregon
Learn what the League is doing to reform redistricting into a fair process for all Oregonians.
The League of Women Voters of Oregon (LWVOR) has joined the People Not Politicians campaign, a diverse coalition made up of all party affiliations, income levels, backgrounds, identities, and all corners of Oregon, to rally for equal, fair and transparent representation at the state and congressional level. Currently, the Oregon legislature is in charge of redrawing district lines. The League is calling for the creation of an independent redistricting commission with strict criteria for drawing district boundaries, which requires an amendment to the Oregon Constitution. The proposed reform takes redistricting out of the hands of partisan politicians and back into the hands of voters to create fair, representative districts. As we approach the 2020 census and the potential of adding a sixth congressional district to Oregon, we need to make sure district boundaries are fair. Learn how districts are currently drawn, what the League is doing to reform redistricting into a fair process for all Oregonians, and how you can get involved. We believe that Oregon voters should be choosing their representatives, not representatives choosing their voters.
The League of Women Voters of the United States supports redistricting reform that promotes a transparent and accountable redistricting process and to end hyper-partisan practices that don’t benefit constituents. The League works in states across the country to pass ballot initiatives to institute independent redistricting commissions. LWVOR has been involved in every step of the process to establish an independent redistricting commission through advocacy, educational forums, and coalition building and if currently working on an initiative petition campaign to get redistricting reform on the ballot for 2020.
