POW/MIA Day Ceremony

The U.S. Congress designated the 3rd Friday of each September as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. As part of ceremonies across our nation, Bend Heroes Foundation will conduct a POW/MIA Day ceremony on Sept. 20 at Bend Heroes Memorial honoring our nations' 86,500, Oregon's 1,000 and Bend's 16 veterans who still remain Missing in Action (MIA) since WWI. The ceremony will also honor Oregon's 600 former Prisoners of War (POWs) and 200 POWs who died in captivity. The program includes reading of POW/MIA Day proclamations issued by the President of the United States, Oregon Governor and Bend Mayor. The names of Bend's MIAs will be read. The ceremony also includes unveiling a POW/MIA plaque, a British Army Sword and POW/MIA Table ceremonies and laying of a POW/MIA wreath. The new Oregon law designating the 471 mile U.S. Hwy 26 across Oregon as POW/MIA Memorial Highway will be presented. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of TAPs. Invited guest include Central Oregon's state Legislators. Volunteers are needed to help install American flags on Veterans Memorial Bridge before the ceremony. Volunteers should meet at Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park at 7:00 AM.
