The High Desert Poetry Cell celebrates National Poetry Month by reading original poems here at Roundabout Books. It was established in 2007 by five Bend poets: Larry Jacobs, Don Kunz, John Kvapil, Peter Lovering and John Martin. The Cell has published three collections of their work and have given public readings throughout Oregon (and additional readings at City Lights Books and Cafe' Trieste in San Francisco). Given the diverse voices of Cellmates, their well-attended readings have frequently been compared to jazz ensemble recitals. All proceeds from sales of the High Desert Poetry Cell's books and free-will donations at their readings have been donated to Bend area non-profits, including Central Oregon Veterans Outreach, Saving Grace, Family Kitchen and most recently Central Oregon Veterans Ranch. The Cell meets monthly for drinks, dinner, and critiques of their original poetry, which can lead to the occasional fistfight. John Martin has recently moved to Walla Walla, but as a Member Emeritus continues to participate in critiques by email and to attend readings.
