LightPath Facebook Video Event Science, Metaphysics, and Thinking Yourself Well
This is an online LightPath Center Facebook video event. https://www.facebook.com/LightPathCenter-2184533481790074/
Live posting as of May 19, 2021 9:00 AM PST, and available thereafter.
Science is a systematic approach to coaxing nature into revealing her fundamental rules and mechanisms. Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that sets an agenda for science by exploring what those rules and mechanisms could possibly be. It sounds like a neat and complete package for acquiring and applying beneficial knowledge. But when the human mind begins to contemplate itself things get complicated: people with problems can often be taught to "think themselves well". Science hasn't yet learned everything about how it works, but we know it doesn't have to conflict with scientific knowledge, and we know it is consistent with metaphysical thinking. In this program we'll explore how these three ingredients, combined in the right proportions, can lead us toward enjoying better physical and mental health.
Mel Siegel is a founding member of LightPath’s Board of Directors, Professor Emeritus in The Robotics Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh PA USA. His PhD and other degrees are in physics, which he did at several universities and at a small scientific instrumentation company until he made a mid-career change to robotics. Within the robotics field his research and teaching have focused primarily on sensing, sensors, and perception. He now spends most of his time in Bend OR, but when conditions allow he travels back to Pittsburgh to meet with colleagues working on a few ongoing research projects in which he remains involved at CMU, and to visit family and friends there.
