Know News- What's Killing America's Newspapers?

Friday, November 8, 2019, 2:00 AM - 3:00 AM

Discuss the current plight of daily newspapers in America and of what could be even worse times ahead.

In these days of Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, 24- hour "if it bleeds, it leads" television cycle news, and internet trolls, it's more important than ever that we turn to reliable news outlets for information. But more and more, traditional newspapers are under fire and on shaky financial ground. Jim Crowell, longtime Bend resident has worked for major newspapers in Oregon. During the discussion Jim will explore the current status of newspapers and speculate about the future of print media.

Jim Crowell, resident of Bend since 1940 was a sports reporter at the Eugene Register-Guard, Bend Bulletin, and LaGrande Observer. He was a sports, police, and general assignment reporter at the Portland Oregonian, then copy editor. He earned a Master's degree in journalism from the UO in 1966. Crowell is the author of "Frontier Publisher," the biography of G.P. Putnam, first editor/publisher of the Bend Bulletin as a daily newspaper and "MENCKEN!," a stage play based on the life of the Baltimore Sun newspaper columnist and social critic, H.L. Mencken.
