Genealogy and Refugees
Everyone in the Americas were once refugees or immigrants with the exception of the native peoples. George Mendeluk’s family were Ukrainian refugees. They eventually settled in Canada, where George grew up and dreamed of making movies. George’s presentation on November 19 is about his family’s genealogy and refugee experience.
Bitter Harvest, his most recent movie, depicts the Holodomor (Ukrainian word meaning to kill by starvation). In 1932-33, Stalin purposely took all food from the Ukrainians to break their will for freedom and force them into communism. Millions starved to death. Government papers documenting the Holodomor policy surfaced in 1991, when the USSR fell. Learn about the Holodomor on November 19, too.
The Bend Genealogical Society (BGS) is for anyone interested in their family history, beginners and experienced researchers alike. We want to help you.
