Cognitive Perspectives on ADHD and Other Disorders Affecting Attention: Implications for Differential Diagnosis and Intervention Presenter:  James B. Hale, Ph.D., ABPdN DATE:  Friday September 27, 2019 9 am until 4 pm (Registration starts at 8:30AM) 6 hours Continuing Education Credit Lunch and mid-morning snack included Location:  OSU Cascades Campus, Specific Location TBA,1500 Southwest Chandler Avenue, Bend, OR 97702 **COAP will cover the cost of parking as a courtesy tied to this conference.  Please park in the main OSU parking lot. Workshop Overview:  Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder typically diagnosed using behavioral criteria. Given that attention problems are ubiquitous in clinical practice, ADHD behavioral diagnosis leads to considerable cognitive heterogeneity among affected individuals. Not only does this heterogeneity interfere with accurate identification of ADHD and other disorders affecting attention, but it attenuates intervention effects as well. Consistent with the American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology Empirically-Derived Disorders of Attention (EDDA) Workgroup,  codified by the National Institute of Mental Health Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) position, the presenter will highlight his work designed to evaluate cognitive and executive functioning in ADHD, and the impact findings have on cognitive, academic, and behavioral intervention response. Using our understanding of cognitive and executive functioning in relation to ADHD symptoms as a lens for understanding different disorders affecting attention and their response to intervention, the presenter will highlight how this orientation can help guide best practices in ADHD assessment and intervention. Findings highlight the need to reconsider long-held beliefs about ADHD, and practices regarding the assessment tools used to identify ADHD, both for differential diagnosis and for developing interventions that lead to treatment efficacy.  A review of empirically supported medication, cognitive and behavioral interventions for ADHD will be addressed.  A case study will highlight how behavioral criteria used to identify a child with ADHD led to ineffective interventions for his attention problems, but once a neurodevelopmental perspective was applied using the Cognitive Hypothesis Testing approach, the evidence-based interventions led to improved academic and psychosocial outcomes for the client. Implications and future directions for ADHD assessment and treatment practices will be offered. Learning Objectives: As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to: Recognize how an understanding of executive function creates a template to consider attention problems in ADHD and other disorders affecting attention; Evaluate ADHD research findings to consider potential impact on field-based assessment and treatment strategies; and Discuss a case study of a child with attention problems using the Cognitive Hypothesis Testing approach for linking assessment for intervention. About the Presenter:  James B. Hale, PhD, ABPdN, is a board-certified pediatric neuropsychologist, school psychologist, and special education teacher. He has served the needs of children with and without disabilities in school, clinic, and hospital settings, and is a Full Professor of Educational Neuroscience (Ret).
